'Tim' is very common name and is already taken. Try another name. You can include a surname to make it more unique. If the name is taken, it currently freezes.

I assume you are using the launcher since it defaults to DirectX, but in the settings page of the launcher you can change it back to OpenGL.

What do you mean "it times out"? A screenshot would be helpful and not just confusing words. If your game freezes, and shows the "not responding" window, try using DirectX mode, which will improve performance on PCs with low specifications and probably make your game not freeze when loading the...

It needs to be an actual shortcut, not FreeSO.exe. Right click FreeSO.exe and then Create shortcut. Edit that shortcut and use it to launch FreeSO. You can put it on your desktop screen.
