The Sims runs in 16-bit colour mode. In Windows 7, this forces the rest of the system into 16-bit colour mode (and makes it impossible to close laptop lid without returning to 32-bit colours). There is an easy solution to this on Windows 8, reduced colour mode, for those who don't know:
This runs only the application in 16-bit colours and not the rest of the desktop. Works the with The Sims Online and Pre-Alpha too. The only disadvantage is it starts up with a black, borderless, window in front of the game and the only way to get rid of it is press Crtl+Alt+Del and then exit back to the desktop. The Sims Online doesn't suffer this problem but TS1 and Pre-Alpha does.
