Seeing the direction Sims 4 has taken, I'm on a pretty desperate hunt for an open source sims game. For obvious reasons, nobody has attempted it, and I'm certainly lacking the programming skill to do so myself within the next century. I believe a large problem with libre game development, besides obvious time and money issues, is that 3D game development is really hard. 3D adds a whole other difficulty to getting graphics displayed.
OpenMW, a similar engine created for running the binaries of Morrowind, has been testing creating a game without using any Morrowind resources at all. Looking at FreeSO and especially Simitone, an already created engine, would it be possible to create our own binaries in TSO fashion and effectively run our own "game"? Essentially replicating TSO's binaries and file formats and using public domain assets. It would take a lot of work, but less than creating a 3D engine itself. The bonus with this method also is that FreeSO/Simitone/etc would be less likely to have legal problems, as there would be clear effort to fork off of using EA's binaries.
