In the twitter app, you can turn on notifications for a specific person. When they tweet, you get notified. You don't need to be tagged.
 
People on their computers could use twitterdeck like you said. Not everyone has a Skype, and that seems to be the current "instant" notifier. Twitter just came to mind. If we want an instant notification, we will need to pick one service to all use. We all have emails, but again, those notifications aren't instant on a computer either unless you're reloading.

People also don't necessairly use Tweetdeeck either :p which is my point.

The only reliable way is to have it be on the main site's sidebar or something, since it seems to be one of the more popular hosting servers around.
 
@TheMarshmallowBear, Yeah, ideally we'd have something built into the site. Not sure that could be implemented.
I can only speak for myself, and I'm willing to download any kind of service if it means I can for sure be notified when the server is opened.
 
@FreeTime When you are at the forum homepage, you will see a small square labelled "Servo Builds" click "Artifacts" and then download the zip file it shows you. That is the latest version avail.

I think this one is built in Windows (and something is terribly wrong with this screenshot, I accidentally triggered a bug)

Yes, I didn't even think of that! Chrome just began rolling out that feature, desktop notifications. So, if you have chrome and twitter, (and we used it to notify about servers) people could be notified instantly.
 
Better still - someone could make a bot that posts to twitter whenever an open playtest is announced here. It could search for posts by @xXJDrocks450Xx containing the keywords "server", "now", "open", so that when JDRocks announces his server as being "open now", it would post to twitter saying "new playtest bla bla" and people could come join. Just a thought.
 
I'm just testing something here. Ignore this, there is no server and if there was it isn't open.

EDIT: just realized that this isn't going to work because of the fact that thread RSS is disabled :(
