You visit lots, meet people, and explore. When you are finished looking around at stuff you can find a skill lot t hang out in and raise a skill that appeals to you. (Of course you can go straight to a skill lot but exploring is fun!)
If you need a break from skilling (it CAN get tedious after a while) then you can also pop into a monmey lot and have a go with the money making machines. Your payouts will get higher under certain conditions, such as having a higher skill, but even lower payouts are better than 0 money, right?
For most lots the owner or roommate needs to be there to open the lot for you but there is one special Community Lot called Party Island that you can visit even if it is closed. I'd not recommend it if you have a super laggy connection just because it has a ton of stuff but I'd definitely recommend it otherwise. Everything you can need except food is there ... plus there's tons of expensive items that many other lots don't tend to have yet.
