How to get into sandbox mode?

I'd like to use the sandbox mode, but can't work out how to get into it. There's the little blue "sandbox mode" button on the upper left, but I can't figure out what to do after clicking that. Thanks, coco
 
Double-click on a lot in the Sandbox selection menu. You should get transported to a empty lot (or a premade one from TSO).
 
I do that, but it just sends me to a gray screen. Below, it shows just a gray box where the sim's face would be, and shows the bars for hunger, etc., as all about half full. Everything else is gray, and you can't turn or anything.
 
You must double click the lot name on the list (preferably fso_empty_lot.xml, or one you have saved with ctrl-s). Clicking the "join server" button will not work if you have not specified an existing server's IP in the text box - it's meant for joining people rather than creating instances.
