There is a glitch. When you buy an object from a shop and take it home it is still For Sale. You must go to buymode and click Cancel Sale on any object that you bought in a shop. otherwise other players can "buy" it from your lot.
If you already did that but laptops are still missing then they might be hidden on your lot somewhere. Or even off of the property a little bit.
The third way an object can disappear is if roommate who does not own it "sells" it. This removes the object and places it in the owner's inventory
