Creating a public internet server
  1. If you aren't sure about port-forwarding on your router, then try PortMapper - preferably one that works correctly; I use this build myself as I have found it relatively stable. If you haven't used it before check out this post here! If you get a message describing the software as 'malicious' from software such as Chrome, then you can most likely ignore it at your own risk.
  2. Port forward, using PortMapper, the port 37564 (TCP only).
  3. Go to noip.com. Create an account, and then click "Add a host". Choose a hostname that suits your preferences - for example, freeso-server-1378.zapto.org, or freeso.zapto.org.
  4. Make sure that the "Hostname Information" box is as follows except the hostname:upload_2015-7-30_21-45-6.png
    (Your IP will automatically appear in the box; it will not be blank.)
  5. Go ahead and click "Add host". Remember that, with a free account, you can only have up to three hosts at once.
  6. Launch your client, Charvatia (for advanced users) or third party server software and start a lot - for new users, I recommend using this lot since everything's set up for you. You share your hostname and people connect to your server using it, it's relatively simple! If you're using the normal FreeSO client, you will become a host as soon as you enter the lot. There is currently no way of changing the port number.
  7. You can join the Discord group and advertise your server in the "#general-sims" channel to let people in the group know when your server's up. You'll also get notified of new servers, new builds of FreeSO, and more! :)
Creating a LAN server
Creating a LAN server is a little less complicated; here is simpler method based on the previous revision:
  1. Press [WINDOWS KEY] + [R] and type in the "Run..." dialog "cmd", and press the OK button.
  2. In the command prompt window that will appear once you have run this command, type ipconfig.
  3. For this next step you'll need to know how you're connected to the internet. I'm connected through a wireless adapter, so I'm going to use the IP address from "Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection":

  4. You can then launch your client and open up a lot - then, you can share your local IP (in this example, 192.168.1.72) with people on your network and they can connect.

Creating a server via VPN software (i.e. Hamachi, Evolve)
Since I really don't recommend doing this (other users have to download third-party software, some software is difficult to use and they're all different in setup) I will never create a guide for this! It's bad practice to give up trying, so if your server isn't working check below :)

Try opening the port on your firewall - or even disabling it altogether while you host - as this is usually what the cause will be. Some other common issues are badly configured ports, so make sure that you've got those right first! If these are not your problems, shoot me a message with your problem along with your router model and I'll have a look for some fixes for you either over Discord, Skype or here on the forums - I'll try to answer as quickly as possible but I'm usually asleep or away after 2AM GMT so I probably won't answer after this point.

Yeah. It only works if your router has UPnP support (which is like, 99% of them) though but you don't have to use any credentials, such as admin passwords, you just need to be connected to the router. I've been using it for quite a long time now. It's extremely convenient and allows you to map an internal port to an external port; for example, if you had a server running on port 888 you could map it to 80 without any special config changes to the server.
 
Yeah, Another software I'd recommend is Simple Port Forwarding, as it does all the hard work for you, but it's quite complex in terms of buttons and everything
 
4.1 If all else fails, check and add the ports to your Windows firewall.

I'm hoping to be this to be rare case. Simple Port Forwarding, the app that Blayer suggested, is kinda what had me pondering this extra step and how I was able to host my lot.

Oh yeah I forgot about not having a firewall because it's pretty much built into my router...
 
Is there any more private way to open a server, perhaps port forward and somehow get it to work through Hamachi at least!?!? My dad wouldn't want just anyone gaining access to our network like that >.<
