Probably a dumb question, but how do you chat in game?

Like how do you do the chat bubbles? Is there something extra I have to download?

Press enter, then start typing. You can also press CTRL-H to open chat history and talk from there.

If enter and ctrl h don't work, does this mean I broke the game?

It might mean your keyboard is misconfigured. You also have to be in a property to chat.

If you're talking about property chat:

It's definitely
"CTRL-H"

But if you're looking to chat privately with a sim, first click on their portrait:


Then in their profile window, click the "message" icon:


That will bring up a private chat window:
