Sim aging; how does it work?

I'm really confused on how aging up in the sims works. I've been playing for quite a few days but it still says my sim is 1 day old. How do I age my sim up? Is it based off total play time, real life time or sim time?
 
Aging is based on real time. You have to wait an actual 24 hours. You don't have to actually play for 24 hours to age.
