What is the difference between DirectX and OpenGL modes?

When I log into the game with the launcher I have to choose between DirectX mode and OpenGL Mode what are the differences between them?

There isn't really much difference, though sometimes DirectX is slower on some PCs. The choice is there in case either one or the other gives you trouble on your PC.
