Why TSO and not EAland?

Hi,
i was just wondering. Why is Project Dollhouse based on the old 'The Sims Online' version and not the newer 'EA-Land' version? Are there any advantages?

Wouldn't it be better to have one big world with all the cities instead of every citiy by itself?

Our community wouldn't be big enough to fit multiple cities, I don't think. It's better to have one big happy family community than a really spread out one where nobody lives next to each other.

Also, the EA-Land client is no longer being distributed. The TSO client, however, is - you can still download it from their FTP site and it has nearly everything that EA-Land did at its closing time.

Yeah the biggest reason is that allthough some of us (myself included) have the EA-Land client, we're all really weary about hosting it because we can't predict the legal consequences of doing so.

Aside from legal issues, EA-Land wouldn't be ideal for smaller server, due to both bandwidth and the amount unoccupied free space. It would literately be a desert.

Why would it take more bandwidth? I don't think it would take much more resources if it's all one big city. Basically it's just a bigger map, where you need more zooming, but that's it?!

It depends on the computer, and the person's ISP. Bugs aside, Sims Online suffered a lot of lag due to it's weak servers.

It didn't have "weak" servers. The serverblades were top of the range. I have that from one of the devs.
Which doesn't bode well for us running SimAntics.
Then again, the TSO protocol was horrible, which was the cause of much lag.

Ahh... I thought they were weak, or at least old for it's time, from what I heard when I was playing and the amount of maintaince the cities got. Then again, I was still new to MMOs at that point.

Anyone can you give me link to download ea land pleaase i want to test with it and search for some iff files...

The EA-Land download is a GB in size. It would be as hard to share as it is finally a good place to host the ISO image I mentioned last year. If anyone does have EA-Land, I wonder how possible it would be for Project Dollhouse to auto detect it's map, if selected and configure itself accordingly.
